The answer to this is sadly becausepanies like Adobe Microsoft and EA have specifically and wilfully declined to support Linux as a target platform for their software. Why? There are any number of reasons. Adobe used to provide Acrobat Reader natively for Linux but discontinued support for it years ago. The reason is probably money Reader use often leads to Acrobat Pro purchases on Windows and Macs but theyve never released (to my knowledge) a version of the Pro software on Linux. It a loss-leader with no hope of recovery. Besides there are plenty of free packages available for various distros that do as good a job (if not better) than Reader ever did. Microsoft has always had a hate on for Linux seeing it as lost sales of their Server line of operating systems. Sure theyve sort-of made peace with Linux or at least presented the impression of making peace in order to try and claw back some market share. Theyve released Office software for Android - which is based on the Linux kernel - but not after all these years for any desktop distro of Linux. EA is just EA. EA will continue to do the most EA thing that EA can do which is be the worst because that what EA does. The answer by Robert Charles Lee user 5417363 is very good advice and gives you what is generally held to be 'standard manuscript format'. Here's the thing though the whole point of it is just so that it's easily legible for a publisher or agent. Those formatting gelines are basic neutral inoffensive idiot-proof; they're there to prevent disastrously unreadable flights of formatting fancy. I don't honestly care if a manuscript is in Times New Roman or if it's in Calibri or something as long as it's easy to read. If it's 11 or 13 points I don't really mind. The gelines are there to prevent you from submitting a manuscript in 32-pt orange Franklin Gothic or worse Comic Sans. (I work in children's books and I have seen way too many purple Comic Sans manuscripts.) These days it's less important because almost all submitted manuscripts are Word documents and as an editor if I don't like the font I just CTRL-A and change it. I like to read off screens in sans-serif fonts for some reason so I go to 12-pt Gill Sans with a ragged-right margin. Basically don't sweat it too much. Follow any submission gelines you're given by whomever you're submitting to and if there aren't any go for something neutral and un-fancy. You can apply this stuff when you've finished writing the book.
